The main purpose of the LogicVein discovery process is to automatically build an inventory of all network devices - routers, switches, firewalls, etc. - without requiring manual entry. This is accomplished by using scanning ranges, credentials, and supported protocols (SNMP, SSH, Telnet, etc.) to probe and classify devices.
LogicVein begins by automatically discovering devices across your network and connecting via a wide range of adapters. This ensures that no device is left unmonitored, and all relevant data is collected efficiently. The home page then provides a centralized view, giving teams immediate insight into network health and activity.
Key Steps in the Discovery Process
1. Define IP Ranges / Subnets
The user specifies the IP address ranges, subnets, or seed devices.
Targets can be:
- Full subnet (e.g., 10.0.0.0/24)
- Specific IP ranges or single IP devices
2. Select Credentials
This section is highly critical to the success of the discovery process. Without the proper SNMP and logins, you cannot discover the device.
Discovery attempts connections using stored credential sets:
- SNMP v1/v2c/v3 - for inventory details and classification
- CLI logins (SSH/Telnet usernames and passwords)
- API credentials (for cloud discovery in AWS/Azure/GCP).
3. Probe Devices
LogicVein pings each target.
If alive, it attempts
- SNMP queries
- SSH/Telnet login.
Uses vendor-specific fingerprints to classify (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, etc.).
4. Inventory & Metadata Collection
Collects details such as:
- hostname, model, OS version
- serial number
- interfaces
- uptime
Results are stored in the Inventory database.
5. Optional: Cloud Account Discovery
LogicVein supports pulling device data from AWS/Azure accounts via API, supplementing on-prem discovery.
Features That Enhance Discovery
Credential cycling: Tries multiple stored credential sets until successful.
Auto-grouping: Discovered devices can be grouped by vendor, model, location, or custom rules.
Scheduled Discovery: Run once, daily, weekly, etc. to catch new devices.
Change Detection: Once discovered, ongoing monitoring can flag when configurations or attributes change.
Outcome
After discovery:
- You have a comprehensive device inventory
- Devices are ready for:
- Configuration backup jobs
- Compliance checks
- Automation and playbooks
- Reports can highlight:
- Unknown/unmanaged devices
- Misconfigured SNMP or credentials
